Understanding Coffee to Grams Ratio
Making the perfect pour over coffee with grams requires understanding the ratio of coffee to water. Generally, the ratio is anywhere between 1:14 and 1:17. This means that for every 1 gram of coffee, you need between 14 and 17 grams of water. To make a single cup of coffee, you will likely use between 16 and 20 grams of coffee.
Use Quality Coffee
It is important to use quality coffee when making pour over coffee. High-quality coffee beans are roasted to perfection and contain more oils and flavors than lower-quality beans. Therefore, using quality coffee will help you get the most out of your pour over coffee. Look for coffee beans that are labeled as specialty grade or single-origin.
Grind Coffee Beans
Before you can use your coffee beans for pour over, you need to grind them. A medium-fine grind is ideal for pour over coffee. If the grind is too coarse, your coffee will be weak and watery. If the grind is too fine, your coffee will be overly strong and bitter. Use a burr grinder for the most consistent grind.
Bloom the Coffee
Once you have your coffee grounds prepared, you can start to make your coffee. The first step is to bloom the coffee. This helps release the oils and flavors in the coffee grounds. To do this, add a small amount of hot water (around double the weight of the coffee grounds) and stir gently. Let it sit for around 30 seconds before adding the rest of the water.
Brew the Coffee
Once you have bloomed the coffee, you can start to brew the coffee. Slowly pour the remaining water over the coffee grounds in a circular motion. Let the water pass through the grounds before adding more. This process should take around 2-3 minutes. Once all the water has been added, remove the filter and your coffee is ready to drink.
