Running Over 60 Years of Age
Staying Active and Fit
Running is an excellent way to stay active and fit, no matter what age you are. With the right approach and safety tips, even those over the age of 60 can enjoy running.
Getting Started
Before you start running, it is important to talk to your doctor to make sure it is safe for you. Your doctor can also provide advice on the best approach to begin running.
Warm-up and Cool-down
Be sure to warm-up properly with light stretching and walking for at least 10 minutes before running. After your run, cool-down for another 10 minutes with a walk or light stretching. This step is important for avoiding injuries.
Go Slow and Steady
For those over the age of 60, it is best to start off slowly. Increase your speed and distance gradually over time. Don’t be tempted to push yourself too hard – listen to your body and take frequent breaks when needed.
Safety Tips
When running, make sure to choose well-lit, level surfaces with good traction. Wear reflective clothing to be visible to cars if you plan on running at night. Be sure to hydrate regularly and carry a water bottle with you. Also, if you feel any pain or discomfort, stop running and speak to your doctor.
